A large difference between the CRT and a traditional PhD is the cohort aspect of the CRT. A traditional PhD usually involves a student working alone with their supervisor, which can be an isolating experience. The CRT involves a community of PhD students – 27 of us this year, and that number will grow with each new year of students – which offers us a support network, and the possibility to collaborate with others who are at the same stage in their postgraduate studies.
I was attracted to the opportunities afforded by the CRT which are not a typical part of a traditional PhD, including the opportunity to work in a placement in industry at the end of the first year. The way that this programme focuses on both industry and academia will provide me with endless career opportunities.
