Edward Gunning holds a B.Sc in Financial Mathematics & Actuarial Science from University College Cork. Edward’s main research focus is the development and application of methods for functional data analysis, an area of statistics concerned with data that vary smoothly over a continuum, such as time or space. In particular, he is interested in modelling functional data that are correlated due to complex dependence structures, e.g., that are collected for multiple individuals repeatedly over time. His work is driven by applications in human movement biomechanics, where apposite statistical modelling of time-dependent movement data can help us to learn about skill, coordination and risk of injury. Edward also has a keen interest in the connection between functional data analysis and other areas of statistics and applied mathematics, e.g., time-series analysis, longitudinal data analysis and ordinary-differential equation models.
